a tree falls victim to drunken office chair riding

there will be a photo filled post of the Invasion of the Tourists alleycat very soon! There would have been one today, but an unexpected ride last night with new friends put the kabosh on that, but stay tuned! there’s lots of great pics and of course the announcement of the fastest person in key west!

and now a short rant about irresponsible office chair riding:

Sights like this are sobering and scary. Drunk kids, maybe all hopped up on meth or coffee (or both!) joyriding and endangering the citizens and trees of our quaint and quiet little island. I really hope nobody was injured and the tree will continue to grow and be healthy. I also hope enough people saw this carnage to help others from making the same mistakes.

Pollard caught a shot of the same mess in the daylight and emailed it to me with the subject, “Seating apparatus violence up in the Keys‏.” It is frightening to think about how many people could have been crushed under that massive branch as it fell from the traumatic impact of the office chair.

hotness

The Invasion of the Tourists has been moved to Saturday, April 17th! I need more time to line up some great sponsors (prizes!) and make a dang flyer. yeah great, i gotta try to draw again, that’ll be entertaining… and on with the blurry photos and rambling…

This conch cruiser roadie was caught locked up in front of Louie’s Backyard. Ohhh what a beauty!  I really dig the isle style on this bicycle. The frame almost looks too nice with that awesome tropical blue paint. Flipped handlebars and a basket too. Dang. Hotness….

Ape hanger handlebars…. with bar ends!…. and a towing ball ready for business on the rear end. Only in Key West.

Pollard and I locked up our bicycles at the racks on Front Street next to the boardwalk and docks and gangplanks and whatnot. There were A LOT of bikes locked up whilst their riders were happyhouring or maybe out on sunset cruises: a beautiful sight. This shot presented itself and caught my fancy. A few weeks later I realized the bicycle with the sticker is owned by Chris at Melo Velo.

towing stuff

First, thank you to Pollard for taking this photo and sending it to me. Just another day in Key Wierd. I sometimes tow my kayak with my bicycle, and this dude sometimes tows his jet ski with his bicycle. I’ve seen an assortment of trailers on the island towing Mallory Square retail space, street vending set-ups and of course trailers with dogs, kids or kids and dogs. Lots of dogs in baskets too; I’ll have to start collecting shots for a dog post.

I wish I could see this beauty in action and see what’s getting towed by such a swanky set-up. This photo was snapped while riding by the Waterfront Market one night.

handlebar madness

DSC00873

I caught this bicycle a few weeks ago while riding to The Bottle Cap for a few drinks. I’ve never seen such a combination of handlebars and bar ends. I wonder if the rider is super super super duper tall!?!? Its mos def a Conch Cruiser with the obligatory basket, fender and handcuffs for a bike lock; though its strangely pretty much rust free! Whateva, its all good. Ride on!

I have a foam sword and its pretty much the greatest thing ever

DSC00876

Well, until today. Tonight I took off the basket and riser bar and replaced them with a simple bullhorn and removed my rear fender. I have been rocking the sword for weeks now. Its great deterrent to stumbling drunk tourists in the middle of the street and really nice for spanking! The basket shall soon return, but until that near future station wagon day, I got me a roadster!

dave on the penny

Its mad fun riding with Dave on the penny. He’s developed a great feel for the bike now and is super comfortable riding fast and dippin’ through the streets. Or trackstanding at red lights. Or just bouncing up and down down like a fool on the seat.

I took this shot last week riding along the border of the cemetery enroute to somewhere or no where, i don’t remember.

Sunday Funday…..Meeeooow!

DSC00736

Just another day in Key West. Cats riding zebras. purrrrrrr…….

Rusty Conch Cruisers or crazy fixies…this is a bicycling town! I really liked the furry handcuffs, very important to prevent chaffing and scratching the paint job.

The Amycat got a flat after breakfast of catnip and mimosas but we got her purrring again soon!

do office chairs belong in bike racks?

DSC00668

So yeah, sometimes you don’t want to walk to the bar. Obviously (i hope) driving isn’t an option. I suppose for some reason you may choose not to ride. And, every once in a while, i am sure we all will ask a friend to push us to the bar in an office chair. It happens.

But once there, what is the etiquette for the storage of the chair? Most office chairs are too low to sit at a bar. Leaving it against a wall like a longboard just seems like a bad idea. So, seems logical one would most likely decide to just lock it up outside? But is the bike rack the correct place?
Shit! I don’t know. But i want my non-fossil fuel burning self propelled brothers and sisters to know, i welcome you to lock your ride next to mine. Bicycles are transportation. And now, office chairs are transportation. Ride on!
